MOVING MORE TRANSPORT TO INLAND WATERWAYS

The EU targets for sustainability are set up high. The Smart Mobility Strategy (SSMS) aims to increase the share of Inland Waterway Transport (IWT) by 25% by 2030 and by 50% by 2050. The aim is to achieve ‘climate neutrality’ by 2050. It can be done by shifting more traffic from roads to inland waterways and rail; and by increasing the environmental compatibility of the various modes of transport.

The sector welcomes these policy goals and is prepared to take over much higher volumes. The IWT does have a substantial modal shift potential within the entire European waterway network. Additionally, to its benefit, already today it produces very low amount of the CO2 emissions, compared to road transport.

IWT Platform has commissioned a study to MWP GmbH with the goal to identify potentials and measures that will lead to a shift of traffic to inland waterways.

This questionnaire will help to identify growth potentials for inland navigation.

Measures and obstacles that need to be accomplished or removed in the future should be identified in order to use the full potential of inland navigation. In addition, the measures that need to be supported with public funding should be identified.

Thank you!
