On 15 April 2026, the European Inland Waterway Transport Platform entered a new chapter with the appointment of Jan Lichota as its General Manager.

Jan joins the Platform at a pivotal moment for the inland waterway transport sector. The inland waterway transport sector is undergoing significant change, driven by the green and digital transitions and evolving European policy priorities. In this context, the Platform supports cooperation across the sector and contributes to ongoing European initiatives.

With a strong background in European affairs and experience across associations, events, and tourism, Jan will lead the Platform’s work in close cooperation with stakeholders across the IWT sector. He will serve as a key point of contact in the engagement with European institutions and Member States, while also supporting the Platform’s growing involvement in European projects and outreach activities.

Currently finishing a master’s in technology and sustainable transport, Jan will build upon his academic background in Law and Management among others and an extensive experience related to international networks, education and communications.

“I am truly delighted to take on this new challenge in the inland waterway transport sector. It is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a field that connects people, economies, and makes goods, people and ideas flow across all Europe. I look forward to working with all partners to drive innovation, embrace the international dimension of our work, and help shape sustainable and forward-looking transport solutions.”

The transition will take place in close coordination with Matteo Matarazzo, who will continue contributing to the Platform as Senior Advisor in the coming months. This handover period will ensure continuity in ongoing activities while allowing space to further shape the Platform’s direction for the years ahead.

This change in leadership reflects both continuity and renewal, building on established work while opening new perspectives for the sector. We are thankful for the work of the outgoing management and warmly welcome our new General Manager and look forward to this next chapter under its leadership.
