The CESNI QP Working Group convened on 11 September 2025 to advance key initiatives in professional qualifications for inland navigation. Representatives of the Social and Education Committee also took part in the discussions.

One of the main topics on the agenda was the varying interpretation of Directive 2017/2397 among Member States. To ensure greater clarity and consistency, the group agreed to develop a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document. Once approved, this will be added to the existing compendium to help align implementation across Europe.

A significant focus was also placed on the development of new electronic tools (e-tools) to replace traditional logbook and service book practices. These digital solutions aim to simplify administrative tasks on board, integrate additional data, and ensure strong cybersecurity and data protection measures. Further discussions on the e-tools will continue during the group’s November meeting.

Other outcomes included the adoption of revised standards for inland navigation entrepreneurs, new guidelines on the use of alternative fuels, and the approval of the agreed FAQs. The group also explored the creation of a centralised database of multiple-choice questions for management-level examinations — a step that would support consistent assessment standards across all Member States.
