The International Safety Guide for Inland Navigation Tank-barges and Terminals has been updated and released in five languages, giving crews, operators and terminals a shared source of practical safety guidance.
The Central Commission for the Navigation of the Rhine (CCNR) and the Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF) published an updated version of the second edition of ISGINTT on 22 July 2026. The guide is now available simultaneously in English, French, German, Dutch and Portuguese, with a Spanish translation planned at a later stage.
ISGINTT is recognised as a principal industry reference for inland tank-barge and terminal operations. It covers the safe handling and transport of crude oils, petroleum products, chemicals and liquefied gases, as well as the operational interfaces between inland tank-barges, other vessels and shore-based terminals.
Practical guidance alongside regulation
The guide is not a replacement for legal requirements. Its role is to complement the regulatory framework with practical recommendations drawn from operational experience and established industry practice. This distinction is important: regulation sets the mandatory baseline, while guidance can help crews, operators and terminal personnel translate those requirements into safe working procedures.
The updated edition maintains the guide's established structure and reinforces attention to risk awareness and Human Factors. These elements are central to safe operations, particularly at interfaces where responsibilities, information and equipment pass between vessel and shore. The guide also contains safety checklists for ship-shore and barge-to-barge interfaces, including cargo and slops transfer operations.
