PhysICAL is a major research project in Austria that deals with the idea of Physical Internet for the logistics industry and is co-funded by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG).  Pro Danube is delighted to provide an update on the progress of PhysICAL.

Austria’s climate targets have been clearly defined, but to be able to achieve them, many things and processes, as we are used to them, have to change significantly and new paths have to be taken. In finding these new ways research plays a decisive role.

Researchers in Austria’s flagship project “PhysICAL” are using the technology of the Physical Internet to not only convey items from point A to point B, but also to bundle supplies and send them to their destination effectively and sustainably via a network and numerous nodes. The main purpose is to establish and explain that this approach makes logic and is cost-effective through four different use cases, rather than just calculating it on paper. Case studies In each of the four pilots, These use cases are designed and implemented in a practical manner in the project’s four pilots.

It takes numerous resources and actors in the network to transfer shipments across multiple nodes multiple nodes. On the one hand, a standardized load carrier that is multimodal and modular is required. On the other hand, there is a platform on which transports and consignments can be linked, coordinated, and booked, as well as transport service providers and shippers who disclose transport capacity and make shipments accessible for bundling.
