The Innovation-driven Collaborative European Inland Waterways Transport Network (IW-NET), started in May 2020 reached its conclusion in January 2024.

The IW-NET project aimed to optimize the European Union’s transport system through a multimodal approach. The project explored improvements in the inland waterway transport (IWT) through digitalization and innovative technologies. Employing simulation and optimization models, the project has validated the potential impact of its approach across various Application Scenarios (AS). The project encompassed the testing of innovative IWT fleets, including autonomous vessels for urban distribution, reflecting a commitment to future-forward solutions.

The scope of IW-NET’s endeavors was vast, spanning from the categorization of innovative green vessels within the inland water transport (IWT) sector to the development of sophisticated modeling and simulation capabilities for optimizing revenue management. This comprehensive approach extended beyond the vessels themselves to incorporate different issues such as security measures, seamless integration of digital infrastructure, and the implementation of shore power solutions. The interplay between these elements showcased a holistic strategy aimed at fostering sustainable and efficient transport solutions in the IWT domain. Moreover, within the IW-NET project, the European IWT-Platform strategically incorporated communication plans, ensuring the widespread dissemination of project insights and findings to stakeholders, contributing to a collaborative and informed approach in the pursuit of innovation within inland water transport

Throughout the work of IW-NET project,  13 research articles have been published, emerging as a significant contribution to the ongoing discourse on the future of European transport.
